Hello, Today's blog post will be on the summer learning journey.

DAY 5: AGAINST THE ODDS

Activity 1: National Treasure

For this Activity, I have to share three things I treasure and why.
1. I treasure my old awards Why? I treasure them because When I'm older I personly would like to see my achievements in the past years.
2. I also treasure my baby photos for the same reason but to see me as I  grow up through the years and the years to come.
3. The last one would have to be my books I love a good read.

Activity 2: Swimming to Safety

for this activity, I have to listen to a podcast or read a web site on Yusra Mardini and retell it to you.

I decided to listen to the podcast about her.
Before I show you I just want you to know that took me about half an hour to do
Here it is

There was a little girl called Her name was Yusra Mardini. She was born in Damascus. She did not like water. She would stand and stare at the water and she would never see the bottom. Every time she thought of jumping in head first her heart would beat a tiny bit faster.  The pool wasn't just scary to her it also exciting her too. So very slowly she started to dip her toes in the water once she got into the water she plunged her head under. Without even knowing she was swimming not just normal swimming she was swimming in competitions. Her father and her older sister helped train her. After all her training she was winning competitions left and right. She couldn't even remember what it felt like being afraid of the water.  Now swimming was her favourite hobby and once she dived in all the noise she could hear before she could not hear now.
When she was swimming and pushing her self to go faster all she could hear was her heartbeat. When she was swimming all of her problems would disappear.  When she was thirteen swimming couldn't solve everything because her country was at war. There were huge protests people gathered in the street and Spock their minds but the government wasn't liking what they were saying so they shot the people that were speaking their minds.  Brave people protested more but the violence was worse.  When she was thirteen the protesters and the government went into a full-blown war.  Yusra's family hear more bad news every day. People were dying not just the soldiers but regular people.  But for the first year, they were safe in the capital in the city but after a while,  the fighting reached the outskirts of the city. Yusra and her family could hear guns etc from there home. After just a few months the war had reached just middle of the city. Yusra and her father walked to the gym so she could work on her swimming but once they got there they could see the roof had huge holes in its ash and dusted had fallen in her pool.  Yusra's training centre had been boomed and she had no place to swim anymore. And some there was no more same places to stay.    Bullets were flying through the town all hours of the day military tanks were rolling through.
Yura and her family have been living in fear.  At fourteen she only saw one way out they had to leave their homeland it was not safe but so was staying there plus what kinda life did they have there? Yusra pegged her parent for the trip to Europe but her parents said no because it wasn't safe for all five of them to leave with her baby sister they are gonna have to wait.  Then the boomings reached her house and their house was destroyed. No one was home when it happened so everyone was safe but they lost everything.  Yusra's mother came up with a plan. Tears rolled down the mothers eye. Her two cousins were going to take the daring ride to Europe and they were willing to take Yusra and her older sister with them.  It was unclear when she and the rest of the family would join them. But for now, the girls would get out. The journey was dangerous but staying in the city was more dangerous. The plan was to get to Arlen Germany where many other people went to. Maybe they could find a welcoming Comunity their and Yusra hope that she could swim again she also heard they had good swimmers in Germany.  The day she left she hugged her parents and younger sister goodbye. Holding back tears.   She left the city with mostly nothing except her cellphone some clothes and cash that she would pay for people to help her and her sister sneak across borders.  They set off with her cousins and a few other people. They flew to many different places before they got to where they wanted to get to. Every step on the way they were terrified of being court by the police.  They were just about to start the most dangerous part of their journey.   Yusra and her sister hide with the group in the forest by the beach they were waiting for the signal form they people that where helping smuggle them into the country to move they need calm waters and to avoid the turkey coast guard. finally, it was time the smugglers boarded them on to a small boat with a tiny engine.
But as almost soon as they started they were spotted by turkey cost guards. who forced them back to shore Yusra had a feeling in her stomach like butterflies but not the good kind because it was going to be harder then they thought. They decided to try again once the sun had gone down. Now with the cover of darkness, they just might have a shot. The sound of the engine silenced them all and slowly the cost behind them started to shrink. The tree they have been hidden in for days got shorter and shorter as they got away out into the sea.  After twenty minutes the engine shifted a bit higher for working too hard and then it started going slower and slower until it stopped. The motor was broken They tried to fix it but water started to leak in.  You see the boat was only meant to carry six people but the smugglers fit in twenty.
The water was starting to get to their ankles and she knew she had to do something. They thought to their self it wasn't worth drowning here and she was a very good swimmer.  She looked at her sister and they both knew what they had todo. They jumped into the cold water with two other people out of the twenty into the boat.  Only four could swim Yusra went in front of the boat so she could pull it with a rope. she used her other hand and her feet to swim. five minutes passed then twenty.  Yusra's eyes Bernd from the salty water. The boat was heavy with sixteen people on board and only four of then swimming and pulling they have been swimming for a full hour. Getting closer to land.  They were going so slow that they couldn't tell if they were getting any closer.  Yusra's leg grows tied but she knew she couldn't stop her flip flops feel off her feet and floated away. All her belongings had floated away. Her sole focus was to get everyone to shore. She raped her hand around the rope harder and kept swimming. They pushed and pulled and pulled and pushed Yusra was so tired she didn't know if she could keep going. Would they die here would they ever see their parents and little sister again.  Yusra wanted to cry but she couldn't because when she looked up she could see one of the little boy watching her swim he was just six years old not much older the Yusras little sister. So Yusra forced a smile and tried to make him laugh she didn't want him to think they would die here even if they might.  Now her hand was raw from holding the rope and her feet were numb from the cooled water and her eyes still burnt and her lips were chapped from the salty water.  But she kept swimming. Yusra was sure she was imagining this time because the shore was getting closer they were going to make it.  Yusra and the other three swimmers dragged the boat onto the shore. And canapes on to the ground. They swam for three and a half hours. They saved themselves and sixteen other people. They made it. Now they had just to get to Perlin. They travelled north from country to country crossing borders however they could. After tracking through some countries they stopped and a cornfield for the right moment to sneck across. Finally, at night, the made a run for it. Not long after they crossed the border the police took them to a camp on the way Yusra and her sister looked at each other and started laughing.  When the police demanded to know what's so funny the girls just laugh harder.  Yusra just thought to her self that they were just going to die in the sea and you think we should be afraid of you. Of course, when they got to the camp they ran away the first chance they got. These girls where not to be stoped. They haven't yet got to where they wanted to go.  After a month-long trip across nine countries, Yusra was in purlin. Things where far from perfect she slept on the floor at a camp and she heard of a swimming club. The club she heard about was one of the best places to practise at in purlin. Yusra tried to get in but it had been two years since she had trained so she was out of shape but the coach could tell she was good. She had great technic but more than that they could tell she loved to swim. Yusra throws her self into training.  Woke up at six in the morning so she could swim before school and went straight for the pool once she was let out.  Her time were improving fast and people were starting to notice. Her coach said she could compete in the Olympics in 2020 but she would become an olympian faster than that. In 2016 they started refuge team and they asked Yusra to be a member. She saws one of ten athletes that would compete around the world.  After all the time she sent getting here from all those countries she still was conceded a refuge. Now she is a proud olympian.

 Bye

  2. Hi Nevaeh!

WOW! You have done so much, this is incredible! How long did it take you to write all that?

Yusra had a very difficult life didn't she? It is hard for me to imagine the struggles that she went through. Once she found swimming, and found that it brought her peace she was committed to it. Is there anything that you do that brings you peace? what is is?

    Blog ya later!
